Five case studies are presented in Part 2 of this
study. The particular programmes featured were chosen because they offer an
interesting variety of insights into how learner support is conceptualised and
operationalised in South Africa.
The
institutions and programmes featured are:
ACCESS
Distance and Learning and Teaching’s Early Childhood Development
Programme. This case study is particularly interesting as it offers
insight into a programme offered by a private provider that,
uncharacteristically in South Africa, offers a wide range of learner
support services
UNISA’a
Adult Basic Education and Training Programme. UNISA is the largest
provider of distance learning courses in the country. Traditionally UNISA
has operated in a purely correspondence mode. The ABET programme is an
example of a new approach being taken by UNISA in which learner support
has been built into the programme from the start
The
University of the Orange Free State’s Bachelor in Management Leadership
Programme is a new programme still in its first year of operation. This
case study offers insights into some of the challenges of starting a new
programme. It also represents an example of a programme in which the
traditional face-to-face and distance education extremes have been blurred
The
University of Pretoria’s BCur Programme for nurses is the only programme
featured to make extensive use of technology in its learner support
strategies
The
University of the Witwatersrand’s Further Diploma in Education offers an
example of where a traditional face-to-face institution has branched out
into distance learning and how an underlying educational philosophy is
manifested in practice.
